The Spencer House Montessori school was founded in 1999 with the goal of providing a truly substantive curriculum in the loving environment of a family owned and operated school. To compliment the unique atmosphere of the historic school building, the Montessori teaching method pioneered by Dr. Maria Montessori was chosen to base the curriculum on. Montessori emphasizes learning through exploration and experience as opposed to teacher-centered drills and exercises.
“Spencer House Montessori is a wonderful school and a positive influence in the City of Alachua. The learning environment is one of the best educational environments I have seen in my 25 years as an educator.” - Marybeth LaPointe
The Montessori classroom is designed to introduce the child to the joy of learning at an early age and provides the framework for individual and social discipline. The years between three and six are the prime time for laying an academic foundation, and more importantly, the years when a child learns the ground rules of human behavior most easily. At The Spencer House Montessori, we believe that it is up to each of us, whether we are parents or friends of parents, to reach out and encourage children as they grow and learn.
On a daily basis, each student at The Spencer House Montessori School will be working on life skills such as tying their shoes, washing their hands, cleaning up their work and being courteous to others. They will watch tadpoles grow into frogs and butterflies emerge from their cocoons. They will study countries in depth, learning about the landscape, the animal inhabitants, the people and the culture. They will be introduced to reptiles, mammals, properties of water, the seven continents, the solar system, music, and much more! Their natural curiosity will be encouraged, and their learning will be supported in a positive environment. Our goal is not just to teach them what they learn, but teach them how to learn.
“It is very orderly and is amazing to see the lessons that are taught to the children. I could not believe how quickly my child learned to read. I live in Marion County but I pay to send her to this school in Alachua as I know she would not be reading and doing the lessons that are taught in this school if she went to our zoned school in Marion County.” -Karen Johns
